Behind the huge and cheeky smile, lies a story of Daniel Masaro; thirsty for education but lacks the required resources. On 4th January 2021, Daniel Masaro in the company of his grandmother walked into Huruma Centre, Huruma Christian School. Not letting the lack of school uniform and exercise books to deter him from gaining an education, Daniel braced the odds to try his luck at Huruma Christian School.
Having been raised by his grandmother, Daniel had missed an opportunity to join Kindergarten when he attained the age of three. Despite being the eldest in class, Daniel has managed to impress his teacher for the good performance so far. As explained by his teacher “Daniel is a good student, despite facing challenges at home he is extremely doing well at this level. A little assistance to make him comfortable in terms of getting the basic essentials at school will go a long way into ensuring that he proceeds well in his education.”
Faced with the unique and challenging situation, Pastor Protus, the school manager was forced to intervene to enable the child to be in school. Tasked with the responsibility to make Daniel feel comfortable in school, Protus ensured that the boy was provided with a school shirt to make him fit in with the rest of the learners. However, this is not enough given that he comes to school without shoes. Even as Daniel waits to be sponsored under the ECAN-CRF program, the prompt response from Bishop Francis Bii to buy him some basic school requirements provides some beacon of hope to Daniel in his thirst for education.
At the time of talking to Daniel, I discovered that his huge and cheeky smile wasn’t for a cheeky situation. To him, smiling remained the only way of hiding his unfortunate situation with the hope of having a better tomorrow. I hope from this day going forward Daniels’s life takes a positive turn in his quest for an education.
